Secret support for environmental organizations
There is a secret agreement between the European Commission and several environmental organizations about financial support of 7 million if they support the EU's climate agenda. The money is said to have gone to the organizations ClientEarth and Friends of the Earth, among others, according to Welt Am Sontag.
The Commission denies this.
But a director of ClientEarth says that the support from the Commission has gone to staff.
Environmental organizations have a crucial role in developing and monitoring legislation, the Commission comments and says that the organizations are allowed to shape their policies as they wish.
Support for environmental organizations has become extremely controversial. The conservative EPP party group says that the Commission has tasked the organizations with lobbying members of parliament, especially regarding the Green Deal, a heart issue for Ursula von der Leyen during her first term between 2019 and 2024.
